The Ledger Hardware Implant Incident: Are Hardware Wallet Risks Greater Than We Think?
Following reports of stolen funds involving Ledger hardware wallets in Southeast Asia, an investigation confirmed an unauthorized hardware implant in one affected device, raising concerns about wallet security and potential supply chain vulnerabilities. However, the full extent and cause of the reported losses remain under investigation.
The incident highlights an important consideration: digital asset security goes beyond keeping private keys offline. Key generation, device integrity, recovery processes, and transaction authorization all play critical roles in protecting assets.
Cregis explores these risks and how MPC-based self-custody, distributed key management, and enterprise transaction controls can help businesses strengthen their digital asset security.
